How to install Kerna in Gmail
Summarise a long thread, get a reply drafted, pull the figures off an attachment — inside the Gmail you already use. Install it from the Google Workspace Marketplace, open a message, and start with whatever you actually have to do today.

What it needs

A Gmail or Google Workspace account
That is the whole requirement — any Gmail account will do, and Google Workspace is not needed.
On a work account, your administrator may decide
Google Workspace administrators can restrict which Marketplace apps people install for themselves. If installing is blocked, your administrator can install Kerna for the whole domain instead, or for a single organisational unit.
How to install it
One route, and it takes about a minute.
From the Google Workspace Marketplace
- Open the Kerna AI Email Assistant listing on the Google Workspace Marketplace using the button above.
- Install it, and grant the permissions Google shows you. They are listed clause by clause on the trust page if you want to read them first.
- Open Gmail and click Kerna in the side panel. You may need to reload Gmail once for it to appear.
Start with one message
Pick whichever of these is in front of you. A thread forty replies long: ask for a summary and find out what was decided without reading it. A message you owe an answer to: ask for a draft, then read it, change what you want and send it yourself. Something in a language you do not read: translate it, answer in your own language, and send it in theirs. Once one of those has worked, run triage across the whole inbox and choose the categories that match your work.
What the free plan covers
- Starter is free at €0 with a monthly token allowance and no card to enter. A token is roughly a measure of how much text Kerna processes for you; the pricing page sets out the allowance on each plan.
- Kerna runs when you ask it to. It does not scan, index or monitor your mailbox in the background; it reads the message you are working on, at the moment you press a button.
- Kerna does not send mail. It writes a draft into your compose window, and the message leaves only when you read it and press Send yourself. Google lists the permission that lets an add-on write a draft as “Manage drafts and send emails” — that is Google’s wording for the scope, and Kerna uses it only for the draft.
- If it does not suit you, remove the add-on the same way you added it and it is gone from Gmail.
Installing it for a domain
A Google Workspace administrator can install it for the whole domain, or for an organisational unit, from the Google Workspace Marketplace rather than leaving it to each person. Each person still signs in individually to link their own plan.
